The Hing Yiap Group was founded in 1970 as a fabric and clothing factory. It was housed initially in rented shop-houses producing a limited range of plain singlets and t-shirts.
In the mid-1970s, an increase in demand led to subsequent acquisition of modern machinery enabling the company to produce a wider range of more sophisticated quality apparel such as tracksuits, jackets, sweaters, polo t-shirts, shorts, pants and others.
In 1975, the company was incorporated as a private limited company.
By the 1980s, the company's market and customer base had expanded to the extent that it had to move from its rented premises to a 5-parcel industrial lot containing the factory operations and the marketing companies.
It was also during this time that the company recognized the need to reduce its reliance on contract manufacturing and made plans to develop and market its own brands of apparel. Antioni and Bontton were subsequently launched.
In the face of emerging global opportunities in the 1990s, the company saw the need to internationalize its operations. The master license for the reknowned American brand "B.U.M. Equipment" was awarded to the company in 1993. Hing Yiap was the first master licensee to be awarded the brand in Asia.
The company was listed on the Second Board of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange in 1997.
